VAN NUYS (CBSLA) – A 39-year-old rideshare driver was sentenced Tuesday to six years in prison for sexually assaulting a Los Angeles woman two years ago, the Los Angeles District Attorney said.
Octavio Canoga Park also told Alvarez Gomez to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, according to Assistant District Attorney Ranna Jahanshahi.
Alvarez Gomez did not advocate rape of an unconscious person last month.
On October 2, 2018 Gomez, who drove for both Lyft and Uber but drove for Lyft that night, picked up the victim from a bar after ordering a ride to take her home.
Instead of dropping the victim down at the desired location, Alvarez Gomez drove a little further. At that point, he stopped his vehicle in a remote area and raped the victim, prosecutors said.
Police tracked down and arrested Alvarez Gomez last September while driving for Lyft. He was booked on suspicion of kidnapping with the intent to commit sexual assault, rape, sexual penetration with a foreign body, and a sexual offense.
He has remained behind bars ever since.
