A member of the OJ Simpson "Dream Team" is among the lawyers who now represent the family of a Los Angeles man who was shot dead by sheriff MPs this week after dropping a gun during a traffic obstruction, lawyers said on one Press conference on Wednesday with.
Carl Douglas, who served as an attorney at Johnnie Cochran's law firm during the high-profile murder trial of the rustling legend in 1995, is part of the legal team representing the family of Dijon Kizzee, who was shot dead after an argument with LA MPs Monday.
Douglas appeared in the 2016 documentary "OJ: Made in America" about the famous murder case.
"We are determined together to use our collective power to fight Los Angeles County," he said of the Kizzee case. “This is more than just a case for me. It's part of my life … When I heard that Dijon Kizzee had been shot in the back more than 15 times, it sounds like an execution to me. "
He called the Kizzee legal team – which includes lawyers Ben Crump and Dale Galipo – "a new dream civil rights team."
Kizzee, 29, was shot dead by Los Angeles sheriff's deputies on Monday after police tried to stop him for “breaking the code” on his bicycle.
He fled the police and slapped a deputy in the face during a fight – he dropped a gun wrapped in clothes he was holding. At that moment, MPs opened fire and beat him more than 20 times, Kizzee's family said.
The family's lawyers said they are weighing a lawsuit against the department but have not decided whether it will go to a state or federal court.
"Dijon was my nephew, but more like a son to me," said Fletcher Fair, the dead man's aunt, who said she became parents to Kizzee after his mother died in 2011. "This is very heartbreaking for me and my family. I just want justice for my nephew Dijon. If we could please get this."
The shooting sparked another round of protests across the city.
