A man who allegedly shot MPs as they arrived Thursday to serve an arrest warrant in a house in Compton was fatally wounded in an exchange of fire with law enforcement personnel, authorities said.
The shooting was reported around 5:35 a.m. on the 500 block on South Bradfield Avenue, according to the Sheriff's Department.
Anti-gang detectives were serving an arrest warrant when the subject of the warrant opened fire on them and they returned fire, Sheriff Alex Villanueva said.
The suspect fled to the garage area and started a fire, apparently to destroy evidence, Villanueva said. Firefighters put out the flames.
A gun was recovered from the scene.
Information on the identity of the fatally wounded man was not immediately available.
No MPs were injured.
