The shooting took place around 3:15 p.m. near West 109th Place and South Budlong Avenue, according to Deputy Sheriff Juanita Navarro-Suarez.
The man had been riding a bicycle when MPs tried to stop him for violating the code, Navarro-Suarez said. He left his bike and ran away, but the MPs caught up with him and a fight ensued.
He allegedly hit a surrogate and then dropped some of the clothes he was holding and, according to Navarro, revealed a black semi-automatic pistol in the clothes.
Two MPs opened fire and shot him several times, Navarro said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
No MPs were injured.
Black Lives Matter Los Angeles called on supporters to protest the murder.
“The Los Angeles County Sheriffs killed a black man on 109th and Budlong… Dijon… and left his body face down in the dirt. We need all hands on deck, ”Black Lives tweeted Matter Los Angeles.
Dozens of demonstrators were at the scene at 8 p.m. Monday night.
The Sheriff's Department did not immediately respond to Black Lives Matter's allegation that the victim was "face down in the dirt", but Navarro-Suarez said it was part of the investigation.
