Barr Defends DOJ Involvement in Trump Sexual Assault Lawsuit – NBC Los Angeles

Attorney General Bill Barr on Wednesday defended the Department of Justice's involvement in a lawsuit against President Donald Trump filed by E. Jean Carroll who accused Trump of sexually assaulting her in the mid-1990s, NBC News reports.

In an exclusive interview with NBC Nightly News, Barr said that it is "not particularly uncommon" under federal law for the Justice Department to intervene when an elected government official is sued in court.

"Yes, this is the so-called Westfall statue that says that someone who is an employee of the executive or legislative branch is being sued for a government tort that occurred while working for the government – because of his duties for the government – then they can get it certified to be transferred to federal court and the United States will then be replaced as a party, "Barr said.
