LOS ANGELES – An aid program to assist tenants and landlords in residential areas in Los Angeles who are struggling with the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic will be filed on Monday, July 13, officials said Wednesday.
The application process for the Emergency Renters Relief Program is open for five days and begins on July 13 at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 11:59 p.m. On July 17, Ann Sewill, general manager of the Los Angeles Department of Housing and Municipal Investments, which is responsible for managing the program, said.
The program provides $ 103 million to provide a rental grant to low-income tenants in the city of Los Angeles who are unable to pay rent due to circumstances related to the COVID-19 pandemic. HCIDLA officials call it the country's largest emergency rental program for corona viruses.
The bulk of the funding – $ 100 million – comes from the city's CARES Act grant.
The subsidy is expected to benefit an estimated 50,000 households in Los Angeles. A grant of up to $ 1,000 per month is granted with a maximum grant of $ 2,000 per household and is paid directly to the lessor's landlord on behalf of the tenant. Eligible tenants are those whose household income is at or below 80% of the area's median income.
The number of applications is expected to far exceed the available funds. Therefore, all applications submitted during the application period that meet all requirements are placed in a random selection system.
The proposal for the program was first introduced by Council President Nury Martinez and Council Members Herb Wesson and Mitch O’Farrell. It is based on a program that was launched last winter when some tenants were allegedly “rented” before a state law to control rents came into force. The resumed program addresses the health pandemic.
Interested tenants are asked to apply online at hcidla.lacity.org.
People with restricted online access can call the application hotline at 844-944-1868 between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. from July 13th to 17th. People with hearing or speech disabilities can call 844-325-1398 during the same time.
The program is open to all tenants regardless of their immigration status.
