LAGUNA BEACH (CBSLA) – A Los Angeles lawyer was shot early Tuesday morning in an oceanfront condominium in Laguna Beach. It was the first murder in the city in almost a year.
At 5:19 a.m., Laguna Beach police responded to an emergency call about glass breakage and gunfire in Laguna Lido condos on the 31755 Coast Highway.
Officers arrived on the scene to find a man with gunshot wounds in a unit on the second floor.
The victim was later identified in 46-year-old Barret Slome, a part-time Laguna Beach resident who was declared dead at the scene.
Detectives say they have access to camera footage from the complex during the incident and investigate to identify a subject.
The State Bar of California website shows that Sloam has faced disciplinary action and has been suspended from admission to the California bar earlier this year.
Officials confirm that Slome survived an unsolved shootout in Beverly Glen three years ago.
Los Angeles police said Slome, whose name is listed in a marijuana pharmacy in North Hollywood and West LA, may have been targeted because the suspects believed he had a large amount of cash and drugs in his home.
Slome's death marks the first murder in the city of Laguna Beach since August 2019.
Tuesday's fatal incident and the earlier shots in which Slome was involved are still under investigation.
The police are still looking for suspects involved in his death. Orange County Crime Lab forensics helped edit the scene and collect evidence.
