Trump says the top Republican told him that Congress would not force the Pentagon to change the names of the Confederate military bases
President Trump said on Friday that the Republican chairman of the Senate Armed Forces Committee personally assured him that Congress would not force the Pentagon to change the names of the bases in honor of the Confederate generals – despite veto-safe votes in both the House and Senate this week to do this.
"I spoke to the highly respected (chairman) Senator @JimInhofe, who told me that he will NOT change the names of our major military bases and fortresses, from which we have won two world wars (and more!). Like me, Jim doesn't believe in "breaking culture," "Trump tweeted.
Inhofe spokeswoman Leacy Burke confirmed that the Oklahoma Republican and the president had spoken, but declined to offer more information about their conversation or Inhofe's plans.
"The tweet speaks for itself," she said.
