A federal judge has signed off on an agreement between Los Angeles magazine and the owners of Epoch Times in which the magazine will print an item in its September issue retracting an article that apparently slandered the multi-language newspaper, according to court papers obtained Monday.

According to attorneys for Epoch Media Group, the March 9 article “Inside the Shadowy World of Shen Yun and Its Secret Pro-Trump Ties” by Samuel Braslow contains defamatory statements published “either with knowledge of their falsity, or with reckless disregard for the truth.”

Messages seeking comment sent to the editor of Los Angeles magazine, an attorney for Epoch Times, and Braslow were not immediately answered.

In a written ruling Thursday, U.S. District Judge George Wu ordered Los Angeles magazine to be “permanently enjoined from posting, publishing, printing or in any other way presenting the article.”

The worldwide injunction is binding on the magazine, its parent company, its subsidiaries or corporate affiliates, any website its controls, and any agent acting on their behalf, Wu wrote.

A stipulation between the parties states that a settlement has been reached that includes a notice retracting the article to be printed in Los Angeles magazine’s September issue and the permanent dismissal of the case without costs or fees.

The article has been removed from Los Angeles magazine’s website although it can still be found on the internet.

Epoch Media alleged in the suit that “demonstrably false and damaging defamatory statements” in the article, including that Facebook “revealed in December that Epoch Media Group … had furtively pumped nearly $10 million in ads through a hidden network of fake accounts and pages,” damaged its brand.

The plaintiff further contends that the article’s claim that Facebook “removed over 600 accounts tied to Epoch Times” falsely suggest that the publication is “compromised and untruthful.”

Braslow describes the newspaper’s website in his article as “a fiercely pro-Trump conspiracy website recently mired in scandal for its ties to a massive network of fraudulent Facebook accounts.”

According to the publisher, Epoch Times is an “independent, nonpartisan newspaper that is dedicated to truthful reporting, which was founded in response to communist repression and censorship in the People’s Republic of China.”

Epoch Media describes the paper as “the fastest-growing independent newspaper in America and is the largest news outlet aimed at the Chinese community outside `mainland China.”’

Shen Yun is a Chinese dance troupe that tours internationally.
